MELBOURNE, Jan 6 AAP - A major street in the centre of Melbourne has been blocked off after a bomb threat at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court.

The court was evacuated just before 11.30am (AEDT) on Tuesday with more than 100 people pouring from the William Street building.

Court clerks ordered people to exit the building following an unspecified threat.

Alarms sounded throughout the building and police cars surrounded it.

Police blocked off William Street between Little Bourke and Little Lonsdale Street, directing traffic and pedestrians to other routes.

It is understood sniffer dogs will be used to scour the building.
